On Saturday, May 5, Cheryl Prell, Rebecca Gundzik, and Heidi Roth, Senior Vice President and Controller of Kilroy Realty, co-chaired a move-in event for People Assisting the Homeless (PATH) to help a formerly homeless woman move out of the PATH homeless shelter into her own apartment in Hollywood. PATH is a non-profit agency, which helps homeless individuals and families find work, save money, and secure housing. The effort began when the group, all members of REal Women, a networking association for women professionals in the commercial real estate industry sponsored by Allen Matkins and co-founded by Cheryl and Crystal, took a tour of PATH’s homeless shelter in late 2011 to see how they might assist. The group began collecting donations from other REal Women members to help one of the shelter residents, a woman in her seventies, move into her own apartment.
Cheryl, Heidi, and Rebecca took the lead in coordinating the move-in event on May 5, organizing donations and assisting the other volunteers. The group worked to ease the resident’s transition into her new apartment and make her feel at home from the outset, collecting everything from furnishings for the entire apartment, kitchen supplies, and grocery store gift certificates to cookies, a casserole, and a welcome home sign for her move-in day. The PATH event was a huge success thanks to the dedication of the team who spearheaded this effort and everyone who donated items. And one touching comment from the recipient of these efforts definitely struck a chord. She said “I think I’m going to cry, but it’s not because I’m sad.”
